Alphabet - ਪਹਿਲਾ

- ਝੱਜਾ - jhajjaa - fourteenth letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet.

Name: jhajjaa
Shape:
Spelling: ਝੱਜਾ
Sound: 'jh' as the 's' in 'usual', the 'g' in 'prestige', 'aubergine' and 'fromage' (French for 'cheese') when you say it out aloud.
Type: Consonant

Mouth: hold your mouth in exactly the same way that you would if you were saying the sound of the 'j' in the word 'jump'. Allow air to get past thus aspirating the sound to get the 'jh' sound
Tongue: Curved so that the front of your tongue (not the tip) touches the back of your tooth ridge. Allow air to get past to aspirate the sound.
Soft Palette: blocking nose
Lips: apart
Vocal Chords: Used. Note that this letter requires you to raise the pitch of your voice when you say the letter. This (ਝ) is equivalent to ਜ੍ਹ. See Other Bits for more details.
Aspirated: yes

Confusion: ਝ ਙ
Reading: When you start, you might sometimes confuse this letter (ਝ) with ਙ because of the loop at the bottom but you will soon get used to the difference (ਙ is also fairly rare).
Another confusion is with ਫ for the same reason (the loop at the bottom that is).
Writing: None
