Below is a piece of test text - the English word 'drink'. It contains a bihari, a paer character and a tippee - all of which should render correctly.

As a matter of interest, I also tried out Gurmukhi rendering on two web browsers running on the same machine running Mac OS X 10.5.5:

  • Safari v525.20.1 - Safari uses the KHTML rendering engine from Konqueror which, as you can see from the tests above, works perfectly. On OS X, this was also true. The only thing wrong was that the paer-bindi forms of vavvaa and lallaa weren't in the font (this could be corrected by installing a font with them in though).
  • Firefox v2.0.0.17 - However, Firefox on the Mac didn't even render the font at all (even though the text of the keyboard layout page was rendered correctly in the title bar of the window). Both I and the shopkeeper looked through the list of fonts but couldn't find which one safari used for the Gurmukhi UTF-8 section.
The details from the server log show the browser information as
"Mozilla/5.0
  (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.17)
    Gecko/20080829 Firefox/2.0.0.17"
"Mozilla/5.0
  (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_5_5; en-us)
    AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko)
      Version/3.1.2 Safari/525.20.1"

Downlaod a small browser 'Drink' test file . . .

Test your browser configuration - installed fonts and capabilities - without having to connect to the Internet.
